From George Gruenthal

Dear comrades and friends,

I just received the sad notice below of Michael Lucas' death.

For those who did not know Michael, he was the long-time editor of Northstar Compass, the journal of the International Council for Friendship and Solidarity with the Soviet People. He not only wrote most of the material, but also did the layout, stuffing the envelopes and mailing of the journal. He kept up this work until he was in his 90s, with help from his wife Helen and other comrades from Toronto and around the world.

Michael was one of the most consistent fighters for socialism. He was a long-time leader of the Society of Carpatho-Russian Canadians. After the temporary demise of the Soviet Union in 1991, most of the Slavic organizations in Canada either dissolved or abandoned socialism for nationalism. Michael and the Carpatho-Russian organization held high the red banner of socialism, and began the work on Northstar Compass. He contacted the forces in the Soviet Union and other formerly socialist countries who were continuing the struggle. Northstar Compass was read by revolutionary and progressive people all over the world.

Michael's spirit in the struggle for socialism will long be remembered.
He will be sorely missed.

In solidarity,
George Gruenthal
Member, International Council for Friendship and Solidarity with the Soviet People

Mr. Michael Lucas Jr.
Subject: Condolence Message

We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of comrade Michael Lucas on May 4 early morning at the age of 94. On behalf of Nepal Workers & Peasants' Party and anti-imperialist people of Nepal, we pay sincere tribute to comrade Lucas and extend heartfelt condolences to Helen Lucas and all the members of the bereaved family. Also, we highly appreciate the sincere support provided to Michael Lucas throughout his struggle by Helen Lucas.

We shall ever remember comrade Lucas as an anti-imperialist fighter, tireless activist of socialism, author and artist. The 'Northstar Compass' brought us together and we marched ahead for few decades. It was a red flag of socialism and the struggle against imperialism. We highly appreciate the initiations he took and great efforts he put to hold the red flag high as a founder editor of the magazine for few decades and as a chairman of the International Council of Friendship and Solidarity with Soviet People. His every contributions to raise voice against imperialism and to spread the ray of socialism in different corners of the world even during most difficult days will be cherished for long.

Michael Lucas remained active in cultural and political works for seventy-five years as a true internationalist, author, artist and musician. Comrade Lucas devoted his life voluntarily and freely for the cause of socialism and spreading the teachings of Marx, Lenin and Stalin. 'The Secret Documents' proved to be an achievement in political and ideological arena and we do believe that bringing other similar books into light would prove to be a tribute to Lucas. His exemplary life and works will ever remain as a source of inspiration for many across the world. Comrade Lucas will ever be remembered for his tireless struggle, incomparable efforts and contributions. We expect the family and remaining friends of Lucas will continue the struggle that Lucas launched even in his absence.

His memories will always remain with us.

Condolences

I remember reading the first issues of Northstar Compass edited by Michael Lucas in 1993 and being struck by the contents. From the journal one came to know of the struggles in the former Soviet Union and the people’s democracies after the destruction of these states and the fightback of the peoples for the re-establishment of the Soviet Union. In all his work in the monthly journal Michael Lucas took the Soviet Union of Lenin and Stalin as his lodestar and this meant that he became a focus of outrage and criticism from the revisionists of various hues in Canada and across the planet. Through the pages of the journal many international political trends came together in a broad platform to support the progressive movements in the former democratic camp. In a small way Revolutionary Democracy participated in this process. Thanks to Michael Lucas a number of Soviet documents were translated into English for the first time in the collection named ‘Secret Documents’. The translation and diffusion of the memoirs of the bodyguard of Stalin were of importance: A.T. Rybin’s ‘Next to Stalin’. Similarly, the translation and dissemination of a preliminary essay by Valentin A. Sakharov ‘The Forgery of the Lenin “Testament”, which presaged the author’s book: Politicheskoe zaveshchanie Lenina: real’nost’ istorii i mify politiki. Moskovskii universitet, Moscow, 2003, alerted the communist movement to the systematised tampering of the last ‘writings’ of Lenin. It is a weakness of the movement that the book of Sakharov has yet to be translated into English and other languages.

The journal also published the statement made by Gorbachev in Turkey that he had planned all along to end the existence of the Soviet Union and the democratic countries and replace them with his social democratic ideals. Northstar Compass introduced the books of the British communists Ernest Trory and Harpal Brar to North American audiences as well as the writings of the Soviet author Irina Malenko and her valuable three-volume work ‘Soviética’. Michael Lucas month after month relentlessly for three decades carried out the work of bringing out Northstar Compass and its associated publications, translated thousands of articles and documents, and prepared each issue for distribution. While Michael Lucas has been separated from life his contribution to the communist movement stands as a monument to him. We express our condolences to Helen Lucas his wife, to his son Michael Lucas Jr. and his daughter, Mary Ann, and the grandchildren.

I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT ALREADY MICHAEL LUCAS IS NO LONGER LIVING!

I just received a sad message from Clifford Roe: on Monday, May 4, 2020, MICHEL LUCAS died. He was buried on May 6.

March 7, this year he was 94 years old. I planned next year to congratulate on the 95th Anniversary not only M. Lucas, his wife and children, but also through the Canadian media. Alas! Instead, I send condolences to the members of his family.

A unique true friend of the Soviet Union! After all, he was the first to sound the alarm that Yakovlev, then this bastard was the ambassador in Canada, was an enemy of the Soviet Union. Yakovlev ordered that Lucas not be allowed to enter the Embassy again.

M. Lucas is a man of great willpower! How many times did Toronto’s Bandera attack him, set fire to the House of Friendship and Solidarity with the Soviet people!

Editor of the famous Northstar Compass magazine! And what Mikhail Vasilyevich (as M. Lucas called himself) was a wonderful writer, artist and musician!

I sincerely grieve for the great friend of the Soviet people of Ukraine! The bright memory of Michel Lucas will forever remain in our hearts.

Hi comrades in Toronto.

I just wanted to let you know how sorry we were to hear of Michale’s passing. I’m very sorry never to have met him in person, but of course I heard about him very much over the years from my dad Harpal and through his work on the Northstar Compass, which played a significant role in helping to rally the anti-revisionist forces after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

This is the short obituary we published on our website this week:

Please accept our sincere condolences. Michael was a true internationalist who will be much missed and long remembered.

From Barry Zwicker

My deep condolences to you, Michael, and to Helen. It eases the pain to know your father's passing was peaceful.

For me, it was always a pleasure working with him. He was as hard-working as he was generous.

It happens that just yesterday, as I continue downsizing because I sold my house and will need to vacate it, I came across a file with materials we used for the last paper issue of Northstar Compass, which I agreed to guest edit.

In it are the photos Michael loaned me, including on the inside front cover, the marvellous shot of him in full flight in Moscow. I kept the artwork to be returned to the Northstar Compass archives, and noted I must call to arrange that.

Please let me know if I should forward this artwork, including the photos of Michael and Helen, to you.

Again, with condolences.

From Irina Malenko

Dear Michael, Dear George,

My sincere and deepest condolences. I'm not very good at writing obituaries, but I can share with you how important was Michael and the work he was doing, for so many people around the world, including people like myself, who felt lost after what has happened to our country. We were grieving, not even fully comprehending yet the scale of our loss at that stage, often confused. In this harsh atmosphere Michael became a pillar of support for us, not only he has helped us to analyse those events, but he also gave us strength to carry on with our struggle for socialism, he gave us hope, he made us feel valued for our experience of socialist life, he helped us to understand that we need to share this experience with others.  This is unforgettable.

For myself personally, getting to know Michael was in many ways a turning point in my life. Through him, I met so many other like-minded comrades all across the world, forged new friendships and comradeships.  It has helped me to really start my political life and to believe that no matter what are the circumstances, I can also truly make a difference with my small personal contribution to our mutual struggle. So, I can say that Michael has given me wings to fly.

He and his work will never be forgotten.

He kept the revolutionary spark going in the total darkness of the reactionary 1990s.

We have to keep it going too.

"A spark will ignite the flame". The Revolutionary flame.

In solidarity,
Irina.

From Jef Bossuyt

Dear Michael, George, Irina,

Herewith I would like to express my sincere condolences on the death of Michael Lucas.
We will remember him as a true friend and an honest fighter for his ideals and the well-being of Soviet people.

On September 21, 2001, he organised the historic first World Congress for Friendship and Solidarity with Soviet People.
In his opening speech he stated:

“The Soviet Union at its heigth gave unstinting and generous fraternal support to the proletarian revolutionary and national liberation movements the world over. Now it is our turn to return this help generously by rendering every conceivable fraternal support to our Soviet comrades in their noble mission to re-establish the Soviet-Union.  The world needs a rebirth of the USSR and socialism now. We must set up an International Council for Friendship and Solidarity with Soviet People !”

Harpal Brar (CP of Great-Britain – ml) wrote about this congress “that he had expected this First World Congress to be boring, but instead he found it “a vibrant body of people who made good arguments in the spirit of comradeship. He also said that the Soviet Union lives in the minds of people around the world and urged that we rede above petty differences and all work for internationalism !”(in “Journey for Friendship between Northern Nabours” pg 411-426).

The International Council was established, the journal  Northstar Compass worked steadily for the realisation of this ideal of the Soviet-Union.

The work of Michael is not forgotten or lost, it remains inspiring and continues in this 21th century. Survivors of this Congress still work for this ideal, keep contact with each other, some even met in Moscow last year and discussed the past and the future of the Soviet Union.  The Communist Party of the Soviet Union is alive, active and militant.

Joined to this letter is a photo of the painting that Michael made in 1991 in Cuba, Varadero Beach, near Havana. He was a friend of all socialist countries and gifted with enormous talents, in politics, diplomacy, human relations and art.

We will miss him very hard.

Good morning,

Thank you for sharing the information on the passing of Mr. Michael Lucas. I learned recently of the passing of Mrs. Enver Hoxha who passed in late February. Despite the abandonment of the revolutionary socialist struggle by many former activists, it is very grand to applaud those warriors for socialism who championed the ideals of genuine socialism and communism up through their nineties.

I look forward to learning of the memorial to Mr. Lucas!

Until then, take care!
